A middle-aged man is suspected to have committed suicide in front of a shop in Asaba, the Delta State capital. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday. The body of the deceased was found in the morning. He remains unidentified.
Residents of the Umuagu area of Asaba in which the incident occurred expressed shock at the development. Some of the residents told journalists that the man was found hanging on the roof of a store on a road.
Further, they disclosed that the man may have committed suicide. However, the residents revealed to journalists at the scene of the incident that the deceased is unfamiliar in the neighbourhood.
Meanwhile, the owner of the shop in which the incident occurred refused to open for business until the corpse was removed. A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the shop owner expressed worry over the implications on business.
Spokesperson of the Delta Police Command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya confirmed the incident. Furthermore, she affirmed that the Police had been contacted and that investigations were underway.
She added that the Force was on top of the situation.
“The Police have received the report of the incident. Also, we are currently investigating the case to ascertain the cause of death,” she said.
In addition, the Delta Police Command spokesperson stated that the police had since evacuated the corpse of the man to the morgue.
